Phantom Works is hiring a Front-Line Software Engineering Manager to lead mission systems, autonomy, and AI software teams supporting advanced R&D for Boeing Defense, Space & Security . This is a high-visibility role based in Berkeley, MO , with broad impact across Phantom Works and partner programs, including Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) efforts — ideal for a hands-on leader who thrives in fast-paced, prototype-driven environments.

This software engineering manager will lead software design and development teams within Phantom Works (PW), joining the Mission Systems, Autonomy, and Artificial Intelligence (MSA2I) organization. Additionally, this position will also serve as the PW Software Skill Team Leader which will provide great visibility across the PW organization while helping recruit new software engineers to join us in our mission.

Phantom Works is an advanced research and development organization responsible for engaging customers through cutting-edge visual modeling and simulation; innovating cross-cutting concepts and technologies; prototyping solutions to extend current products and win new programs; developing new businesses and entering new markets.

Position Responsibilities:

Manages, develops, and motivates 15-20 employees on a multi-skill agile development team performing engineering and technical activities for the mission systems, autonomy, and AI software products

Oversees day-to-day program execution for software development teams

Collaborates with 3rd party vendors to develop more robust solutions

Acquires resources to support development team needs and encourages process improvements

Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners and direct reports

Targets and shapes new market opportunities while defining clear product roadmaps

Acts as the Staffing focal for the Phantom Works Software organization

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):

Bachelor’s Degree

7+ years of software development experience

3+ years of experience in software management or team lead role

2+ years of experience managing software development teams and delivering projects on time

Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science)

Experience with C++ and Python

Experience with DevOps tools and practice

Experience with cloud platforms

Experience with LLMs and vibe coding

Excellent leadership, mentoring, and team-building skills

Strong communication skills to interact with cross-functional teams and stakeholders

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively

Travel: 10%
